ANSYS Tutorial: Import Materials from MAPDL

This article presents a convenient way to import materials from MAPDL into Workbench. It will help ANSYS MAPDL veterans begin with Workbench as well as those who have a material library in MAPDL and have to run simulation in Workbench.

It happens frequently that we have material properties in MAPDL format but we have to perform simulations in Workbench. There is no direct way to import MAPDL material into Workbench. Such as here we have a temperature-dependent multilinear material with three curves and each curve has five points. In order to utilize this material, we have to fill in all these data manually in Workbench, Engineering Data. It is tedious.

Fortunately, with help of FE Modeler we can import MAPDL materials into Workbench by a workaround. Step 1: start MAPDL and read in all materials we are going to import. No model such as node and element is needed here. And then create a cdb file by command CDWRITE:

Step 2: start Workbench and insert FE Modeler. Right-click on Model and choose “Add Input Mesh”. Of course here we have no mesh. Choose the cdb file we created in Step 1:

Step 3: connect Engineering Data to Model and update the project:

When it is updated, we will see a new material ”Unnamed” is added with all defined properties:

Now the material is ready to use in this project. But it is not practical to import a cdb file every time when we need materials from MAPDL. Therefore in Step 4 we create a material library to make future usages convenient. Right-click on “Unnamed” and choose “View Linked Source”:

Engineering Data Sources page shows a new library “FiniteElementModelMaterials” appeared at the end of the list.

Step 5: activate “Edit Library” and rename the library and the imported material:

After uncheck “Edit Library”, we can save it as an external xml file:

We accept modifications and save it in a suitable directory:

Step 6: it is time to use it. In a project where the new materials are needed, open Engineering Data:

And add a new library:

Done!
